Role of Senate Congressional Committees in Health Legislation

Sara Hart, MSN, RN

Several thousand pieces of legislation are referred to committees during each Congress, however only a small percentage will be given consideration. This creates a powerful role for committees in determining legislative agendas. For this reason, it is important to monitor the activity of committees that have jurisdiction over issues relating to health care and health professions. In addition, it is valuable to develop and maintain a relationship with members of these committees and their staff.
