Policy Update: Final Rule on Physician Supervision for Certified Registered Nurse AnesthetistsOn January 18, 2001, the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) released its final rule on the supervision of Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs). The rule removes a federal requirement that a physician, specifically the surgeon or anesthesiologist, must supervise nurse anesthetists delivering anesthesia to Medicare patients. The HCFA rule defers to the states on the issue of whether a CRNA must be supervised or not.
