Medicare Quality Initiative

Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson announced the Medicare Quality Initiative (MQI) in November 2001. With this announcement, a new era of public reporting of health care outcomes began. This policy update discusses the purposes of the MQI, its implementation, and the reports on the Nursing Home Quality Initiative and the Home Health Quality Initiative. Hospitals and physician practices are future targets of the MQI.
