Generation of Health Care Policy: Using Evidence to Implement Change for a Nurse-Midwifery Practice

Lynette Ament, PhD, CNM, RN

Yale University School of Nursing, New Haven, Connecticut; University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee; University of Illinois

This article examines how a certified nursemidwifery practice used evidence-based practice data from 2000 to 2001 to influence health care policy in a managed care environment. Managed care has assumed an integral role in our ability to care for women and families. It affects not only our ability to directly provide care but also indirectly to provide care. Managed care is driving local, state, and federal policies. Health care policies can be changed through improved outcomes, cost-effective care, and good consumer relations.

Key Words: certified midwifery practice • certified nurse midwife • evidence-based practice • health policy • managed care
